Kaduna house: Police arrest seven, hand over 300 rescued children

The Kaduna State Police Command said that it had handed over to the State Government the 300 inmates of a rehabilitation centre at Rigasa in Kaduna, rescued on Thursday.

The Parents of some of the children had disputed police claims that the inmates were being abused and held against their wish.

The Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Yakubu Sabo also told the News Agency of Nigeria Saturday that the over 300 inmates were handed over to the Kaduna State Government on Friday for a reunion with their families.

He, however, said that seven suspects earlier arrested were being investigated.

The PPRO defended the police raid on the centre, saying it was based on reports of torture and abuse, not whether the inmates were willingly taken there by their parents.

“Whether or not they were the ones who handed their children over, there is a limitation to what can be done to human beings, even by parents.

According to  the Nigerian law, even if it is the father that subjected his child to inhuman treatment, there is a level where he will be held liable for his action.

“We are not iuestioning whether the parents took their children there, what we are saying is that inhuman treatment was meted out to those children in violation of the law, which won't be taken likely.

“The school in question have no licence to operate as well.

The agencies of government that are supposed to supervise them are not put into consideration.

As far as we know and are concerned, they have not tendered any document to show that they were licenced.

“If you have a licence to offer a correctional program, that in itself does not give you a right to offer an educational program.

“Even if you are licenced, it does not give you the right to go ahead without having the required manpower and skills to carry out the programme. All these are not there,” Sabo said.

Court restrains AMCON from acquiring assets of Aero Contractors

An Abuja Federal High Court on Thursday granted an order restraining the Assets Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) from acquiring the assets of Aero Contractors Ltd.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed, granted the interlocutory order at the resumed hearing of a suit filed by Mrs Cecilia Ibru, ex-Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank against AMCON.

In the suit, Ibru is challenging the plan to take over assets of Aero Contractor on the ground that AMCON breached the terms of agreement she entered with the Federal Government in 2010.

At the Thursday sitting, Ibru’s counsel, Dr Ted Iseghohi-Edwards, moved a motion for the maintenance of status quo, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The lawyer argued that the motion was necessitated by the recent moves by AMCON to acquire the asset, notwithstanding the pending case challenging the action.

He urged the court to grant the restraining order to protect the substance of the case.

Mr Abayomi Okubote and Mr Terhemba Gbashima, counsel representing the defendants, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and AMCON, respectively opposed the motion.

Ruling in the matter, Justice Mohammed, granted the application and ordered parties to return to the status quo, prior to the commencement of the suit.

“The plaintiff’s prayer is that in the last few days, AMCON had made moves toward acquiring the assets of Aero Contractors Ltd.’’

He prayed the court to grant an order for the maintenance of status quo in view of the court’s forthcoming vacation.

“Consequent upon the above reason, I hereby, order parties to maintain status quo until the determination of this suit.

“If, however, it is later proved that the plaintiff hid some material facts about Aero Contractors, it should be prepared to pay whatever damages to the defendants,’’ he held.

The judge also ordered the plaintiff to file an undertaking to that effect within 24 hours and adjourned the case till Sept. 17 for further hearing (NAN)
